I have prepared the following lesson for your intellectual edification! :-) 


I. Movie: In the link below, you will find the BBC production of ATTWN. Watch from the beginning to 36:00 min (up to the moment of the phonograph record). 


II. Character Profile: Please choose ONE character from the following character profiles and fill it in with the relevant information. ONLY Gender, Age, Occupation, Description, Suspicious behavior, Reason for Going, Skeleton in Closet. The rest will be revealed as the plot thickens!!!!!

III. Poem: As the guests die, one by one, keep track of them according to the nursery rhyme below. 

IV. Discussion Questions: Be sure to have these questions answered (with textual evidence!) in your notebooks. 

Ch. 1 

1.How are the passengers traveling? 2.What point of view is the novel written from? Why would the author choose to narrate the novel this way? 3.Who invites the characters to Soldier Island? 4.What would you title this chapter? Why?

Ch. 2. 

1.What is unusual about the invitations the guests of Soldier Island have received? 2.How do the other characters in the novel react to their first glimpse of Anthony Marston? 3.Who is Fred Narracott? What is his opinion about the guests? 4.Describe the house on Soldier Island?

Ch. 3. 

1.What do the ten soldier figurines on the dining room table represent? 2.What does the gramophone recording state? Who plays the gramophone announcement? 3.The gramophone record is titled “Swan Song.” What is a “swan song”? Why do you think the record is titled this? 4.What do the guests discover about the name of the person who invited each of them to the island (what do the initials represent)?

Ch. 4. 

1.What information do you find out about each character’s connection to a past death in this chapter? 2.Which characters admit to the deaths they are accused of in the gramophone recording? 3.The judge suggests that all the guests should leave the island immediately. What is the problem with this course of action?

Ch. 5. 

1.What is ironic about the “young Norse God” being dead? 2.What do the guests conclude about Marston’s death? 3.Why is the house’s lack of atmosphere so frightening? 4.What Biblical allusion made Macarthur uncomfortable? Why? 5.Who is your prime suspect? Why?

Ch. 6. 

1.What does Emily Brent conclude is the cause of Mrs. Roger’s death 2.Why are the guests suspicious that the motorboat won’t arrive? 3.What eerie warning does General Macarthur give to the guests? 4.What does Rogers notice is missing from the dining room?
